Why I’m Walking…

My name is Lynne Strickland and this year is my first year as a Team Captain for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. My co-workers at WTZQ Radio have always taken a very active role in this event and we have donated remotes and as much air time as they needed, but this is the first time I have had the honor of being a Captain, so needless to say, I am a both excited and overwhelmed at times!

I chose to be a Team Captain for one reason. One year ago, my sister-in-law, Katie Strickland, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Being under the age of 40, no family history, and a lifestyle as clean as a whistle, we were all scared and stunned to say the least. Now, a year later and with her chemo and radiation behind her, Katie is doing great. She not only fought the disease, she “double dog dared it” to slow her down and therefore was an inspiration and source of motivation for everyone that knew her.

So this year on May 30, 2008, I proudly walk for Katie Grantham Strickland and the many other young mothers, grandmothers, and ladies out there fighting like champions.

Please support this year’s Relay for Life by attending this fun afternoon event at a most unforgettable setting or go online to Pampered Chef and support us that way!

American Cancer Society’s

2008 Relay For Life of Henderson County

The Time and Place:

Relay For Life takes place on Friday, May 30th and Saturday, May 31st at North Henderson High School, 35 Fruitland Rd, Hendersonville, NC. The Opening Ceremony and Survivor Victory Lap begin at 6:00 pm, and the Luminaria Ceremony starts at 9:00 pm.

The Purpose:

Relay For Life is a unique, fund raising event for the American Cancer Society that not only celebrates cancer survivors, but also increases cancer awareness in the Henderson County community. It is a community-owned event, which takes place overnight symbolizing that cancer never sleeps.

The Event:

Relay For Life involves teams of 10 to 15 people taking turns walking around a track, relay style, for the duration of the event. Participants from Henderson County businesses, schools, churches, civic groups, families and friends form teams that raise funds prior to and at the Relay. Teams are formed to rally in support of a co-worker or loved one who is fighting or has lost the battle with cancer.

The Fundraising:

Each team member pays a registration fee of $10 and is asked to raise a minimum of $100 in donations to support the American Cancer Society’s programs of research, education, advocacy, and patient services. Participants receive information on how to raise money prior to the event. In addition, the Relay depends upon financial and in-kind donations from corporate sponsors to help make it successful. The Relay For Life is an ideal opportunity for your business to enhance its image by supporting its employees who are taking up the fight against cancer.

The Impact:

Relay For Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society, and last year raised $426 million at 4,500 events worldwide. Three million Americans have been touched by Relay, including 500,000 survivors. One in every 100 Americans participates in Relay. In the South Atlantic Division, 565 events raised more than $67 million. In 2007, Relay For Life of Henderson County raised over $180,103. In its 12 years in Henderson County, Relay has raised over $870,000!

The Fun:

During the Relay, a community party atmosphere is created through team members camping out, enjoying entertainment, food, games, and camaraderie all night long.

The Healing:

The highlights of the event are the Survivors' Lap, one walk around the track by survivors who are winning their fight against cancer, and the Luminaria Ceremony to remember those who lost their battle with cancer, to honor cancer survivors, or to pay tribute to someone who has been of special inspiration. The bagged votives, which are sold prior to the event, burn throughout the night and serve as a reminder to all participants of the reason for Relay For Life. The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life represents the HOPE that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that those who fight cancer will one day succeed in eliminating the disease forever.
