  • JANUARY CHRISTIAN LIVING CLASSES AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, TWO SIX-WEEK CLASSES KICK OFF THE NEW YEAR:  GRIEF RITE AND EPHESIANS: THE “LITTLE BIBLE.” FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH ANNOUNCES THE START OF ITS 2016 SCHOOL OF CHRISTIAN LIVING PROGRAMMING. A VARIETY OF CLASSES WILL BE OFFERED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, WITH TWO BEGINNING AND IN JANUARY AND FOUR MORE SCHEDULED THROUGH THE WINTER. ALL CLASSES ARE OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY.  GRIEF RITE BEGINS ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20, 10AM UNTIL NOON, AND RUNS FOR SIX WEEKS, CONCLUDING ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24. THIS COURSE IS A BIBLE STUDY DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE GRIEVING OR FOR THOSE DESIRING TO SUPPORT RELATIVES, FRIENDS OR NEIGHBORS THROUGH THEIR GRIEF. THE BIBLE OFFERS US HELP UNDERSTANDING THE GRIEF PROCESS THROUGH THE LIVES OF BIBLICAL CHARACTERS. WE WILL STUDY SIX OF THESE EXAMPLES. THE COURSE IS LED BY PASTOR MARK RALLS AND SUE COBB. A PARTICIPANT BOOK IS AVAILABLE FOR $8. EPHESIANS: THE “LITTLE BIBLE” IS A SIX WEEK COURSE BEGINNING ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 21 AND CONCLUDING ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18. THE 90-MINUTE CLASS WILL BE OFFERED TWICE EACH DAY, AT 10AM AND 6PM. MARTIN LUTHER CALLED THE BIBLE’S BOOK OF EPHESIANS “THE LITTLE BIBLE” BECAUSE IT CONTAINS THE APOSTLE PAUL’S MOST FAMOUS TEACHINGS WHICH CAN IMPACT OUR LIVES AND ATTITUDES OF TODAY. THIS CLASS FEATURES A SERIOUS LOOK AT THE ACTUAL BIBLICAL TEXT AND WHAT IT MEANS TO EACH OF US. THE COURSE IS LED BY DR. WAYNE WOOD. STUDENTS SHOULD BRING A BIBLE AND NOTEBOOK. THERE IS NO CHARGE. TO REGISTER OR LEARN MORE ABOUT ALL COURSES OFFERED AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH VISIT WWW.FUMCHVLNC.ORG OR CALL 828-693-4275. THE CHURCH IS LOCATED AT 204 SIXTH AVENUE WEST. CONVENIENT AND HANDICAP-ACCESSIBLE PARKING IS AVAILABLE IN THE BUNCOMBE STREET LOT
  • ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST, FORTY DAYS OF LENT BEGINS ON ASH WEDNESDAY.  HENDERSONVILLE:  FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH WILL HOLD TWO ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES IN THE CHURCH’S CHAPEL AT NOON AND 6:30 P.M. ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2016.  “ASH WEDNESDAY MARKS THE FIRST DAY OF LENT, A SEASON OF 40 DAYS LEADING UP TO EASTER,” SAYS REV. CHRISTY SHARP, ASSOCIATE PASTOR. “TRADITIONALLY, CHRISTIANS WEAR THE SIGN OF THE CROSS IN ASHES ON THEIR FOREHEADS AS A SIGN OF PENITENCE. LENT IS A TIME OF REFLECTION, PRAYER AND FASTING.”  FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IS LOCATED AT 204 SIXTH AVENUE WEST. CONVENIENT AND HANDICAP-ACCESSIBLE PARKING IS AVAILABLE IN THE CHURCH’S BUNCOMBE STREET LOT. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHURCH, VISIT WWW.FUMCHVLNC.ORG.
  • ASH WEDNESDAY OBSERVANCE AT GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH, IN COMMEMORATION OF THE BEGINNING OF THE CHRISTIAN PENITENTIAL SEASON OF LENT, ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES AT GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH WILL BE CONDUCTED ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10TH AT 12:15 AND 7:00 P.M. WITH HOLY COMMUNION SERVED AT BOTH. FOR CHRISTIANS, ASH WEDNESDAY COMMEMORATES THE BEGINNING OF THE 40 DAYS SPENT BY JESUS CHRIST IN THE DESERT, WHERE HE ENDURED TEMPTATION BY SATAN. THE SEASON OF LENT ORIGINATED AS A MIRRORING OF CHRIST’S 40 DAYS OF FASTING AS PREPARATION FOR EASTER. ASHES WERE USED IN ANCIENT TIMES TO EXPRESS GRIEF. TODAY, CHRISTIANS CONTINUED THE PRACTICE OF USING ASHES AS AN EXTERNAL SIGN OF REPENTANCE. AT GRACE LUTHERAN, THOSE ATTENDING THE SERVICE WILL BE INVITED TO RECEIVE THE IMPOSITION OF ASHES FROM THE BURNED PALMS OF LAST YEAR’S PALM SUNDAY, PRIOR TO RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION. FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO RECEIVE THEM, THE PASTORS WILL APPLY ASHES IN THE SHAPE OF THE CROSS ON THE FOREHEAD OF EACH WORSHIPER. THIS SERVES TO WITNESS THAT ALL PEOPLE ARE SINNERS IN NEED OF REPENTANCE AND THAT THROUGH JESUS ALL SINS ARE FORGIVEN THROUGH FAITH. THE REV. KEN LANGSDORF, PASTOR, WILL DELIVER THE SERMON BASED ON THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW 6, AND THE THEME OF THE WORSHIP MESSAGE WILL BE LIFE IN ASHES AND GRACE. ALL ARE WELCOME AT THESE SERVICES, AND THOSE WHO BELIEVE THAT HOLY COMMUNION CARRIES WITH IT THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS AND THE PROMISE OF ETERNAL LIFE ARE INVITED TO SHARE IN THIS MEANS OF GOD'S GRACE.  NURSERY CARE FOR CHILDREN AGES BIRTH TO 5 YEARS OLD WILL BE AVAILABLE DURING BOTH SERVICES. GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH IS LOCATED AT THE CORNER OF SIXTH AVENUE WEST AND BLYTHE STREET IN HENDERSONVILLE. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CALL 828-693-4890.
