AND COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • CINCO DE MAYO CELEBRATION AT GRACE LUTHERAN, GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH INVITES THE COMMUNITY TO EXPERIENCE ASPECTS OF MEXICAN CULTURE AND TO CELEBRATE CINCO DE MAYO IN A SPIRIT OF FRIENDSHIP AND AS A GOOD NEIGHBOR ON FRIDAY, MAY 6 AT 6 P.M. IN STULL HALL. AS TAUGHT IN MEXICAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, CINCO DE MAYO CELEBRATES “LA “BATALLA DE PUEBLA,” (BATTLE OF PUEBLA), THE DEFEAT OF NAPOLEON III FRENCH ARMY BY THE MEXICAN ARMY GENERAL IGNACIO ZARAGOZA IN 1862. THIS CELEBRATION EVENT IS BEING COORDINATED BY THE GRACE LUTHERAN SPANISH CLASS “CHOCOLATE,” THE CHURCH’S HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE, AND HISPANIC HERITAGE MEMBERS OF GRACE.       CINCO DE MAYO IS THE BEST KNOWN PATRIOTIC MEXICAN CELEBRATION IN THE U.S.A. “FIESTA,” A COMBINATION OF FOOD, DRINKS, MARIACHI MUSIC, AND FUN, IS WHAT COMES TO MIND WHEN THE ADVERTISEMENT INDUSTRY PROMOTES CINCO DE MAYO. MOST HISTORIANS AGREE THAT THIS VICTORY OF THE MEXICAN ARMY OVER THE FRENCH WAS SYMBOLIC. SIX YEARS LATER, IN 1868, WITH THE POLITICAL AND MILITARY SUPPORT OF THE US AFTER THE CIVIL WAR, FRANCE WITHDREW AND THE MEXICAN ELECTED PRESIDENT BENITO JUAREZ WAS ABLE TO GOVERN. IGNACIO ZARAGOZA, THE NATIONAL HERO OF THE BATTLE OF PUEBLA, WAS BORN IN GOLIAD, TEXAS IN 1829, BEFORE THE MEXICAN AMERICAN WAR OF 1847 WHEN MEXICO LOST THIS WAR AND HALF OF ITS TERRITORY. BOTH AMERICANS AND MEXICANS TEND TO FORGET CHAPTERS OF THEIR HISTORY IN WHICH, AS NEIGHBORS, THEY HAVE BEEN FRIENDS AND FOES. GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH IS LOCATED AT THE CORNER OF SIXTH AVENUE WEST AND BLYTHE STREET IN HENDERSONVILLE. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CALL 828-693-4890.

PRIOR TO THE CLASS ARE WELCOME. THE COST FOR DINNER IS $5 PER PERSON AND RESERVATIONS FOR EACH WEDNESDAY DINNER MUST BE MADE THE MONDAY PRIOR BY CALLING 828-693-4890.       THE AUTHOR OF THE STUDY, ADAM HAMILTON, SAYS “THE GOSPEL OF JOHN IS THE MOST DEEPLY SPIRITUAL OF THE FOUR GOSPELS. THIS WRITING IS FILLED WITH RICH IMAGES AND PROFOUND TRUTHS, BUT JOHN NOTES THAT HIS AIM IN WRITING THE GOSPEL IS THAT READERS WILL NOT ONLY BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST, BUT THAT THEY MAY HAVE LIFE IN HIS NAME. YOU’LL FOLLOW THE LIFE, MINISTRY, DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS THROUGH THE GOSPEL OF JOHN AND UNDERSTAND THE CONTEXT OF SOME OF THE BEST-KNOWN VERSES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT.” THIS SERIES IS PART OF OASIS AT GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH, A MID-WEEK “SPIRITUAL REFRESHMENT” FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN. DINNER, ADULT CLASSES AND SUPERVISED CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES FOR AGES 5 YEARS THROUGH 5TH GRADE FROM 5:30 TO 7:30 P.M. ARE AVAILABLE AS WELL AS FREE NURSERY CARE DURING THE “JOHN” ADULT CLASS. WITH SUPPORT FROM CHURCH STAFF, THE ORGANIZERS MADE A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS WHO WANTED TO HELP PROVIDE MEALS TO THOSE IN NEED.” LOVE’S KITCHEN USES REAL DISHES AND SILVERWARE FOR THE WEEKLY MEAL.       WHILE WALKING AMOUNG HER GUESTS DURING THE WEEKLY MEAL, MILLER NOTICED A MAN WHO SEEMED TEARFUL AS HE ATE. HE SAID, “I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M EATING OFF A REAL DISH. I HAVEN’T EATEN OFF A REAL DISH IN YEARS,’ MILLER SAID.       THIS HOME COOKED “HOT” LUNCH IS SERVED EACH THURSDAY TO ALL WHO ARRIVE. ABOUT 100 GUESTS USUALLY COME EACH WEEK, BUT MILLER HAS SEEN AS MANY AS 132 COME FOR ONE MEAL. “LOVES KITCHEN” ALSO TRIES TO MEET ITS GUESTS’ OTHER NEEDS THROUGH PROGRAMS OFFERED ALONG WITH THE WEEKLY LUNCH.
